THe Mission

Somewhere deep in the Trinity Alps, there was a lake with almost nothing written about it. No photos, no trip reports, no clear way; just coordinates on a map and the idea that it might be something worth finding. Nico had been staring at it for years, tracing the terrain, imagining what was out there. Big water, clean cliffs, and something largely unexplored.

Last summer, we stopped talking about it and sent out to find it.

There wasn’t much of a strategy beyond that. A small crew, a long way in, and no real expectations for what we’d find when we got there. That uncertainty shaped everything.

Knowhere wasn’t directed in the traditional sense. It took form afterward, pieced together by Justin Woehler and Cosmo Free in post. What mattered wasn’t documenting the place as it is, but capturing what it felt like to be there. the scale of it, the disorientation, the sense of stepping into something that has been kept by nature.

We chose to produce it in black and white, stripped back and a little raw, letting the sound do more of the talking and leaving space for interpretation rather than trying to define it. if you want to know what Smith Lake looks like, you have to go find it yourself.

This film is just what it felt like to get there.
